Washington Quarters (1932–1998)

The Washington Quarter debuted in 1932 to honor the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth. Designed by John Flanagan, it replaced the Standing Liberty Quarter. The coin began as 90% silver (1932–1964), then transitioned to a copper-nickel clad composition in 1965.

  • Key Early Dates: The 1932-D and 1932-S are considered rare semi-keys, each with very low mintages.

  • 1965–1998: The design remained mostly unchanged, though in 1992 the U.S. Mint began producing annual Silver Proof Sets with 90% silver quarters for collectors.

Statehood Quarters (1999–2008)

One of the most popular U.S. coin programs, the Statehood Quarter series honored each of the 50 states with unique reverse designs. Released five per year, they re-energized public interest in coin collecting.

  • Composition: Circulation strikes were copper-nickel clad; silver proof versions (90% silver, later .999 fine) were sold to collectors.

  • Collectibility: Certain error coins, such as the 2004 Wisconsin “extra leaf” quarters, are highly prized.

D.C. & U.S. Territories Quarters (2009)

A one-year follow-up to the Statehood series featuring six designs: D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands.

America the Beautiful Quarters (2010–2021)

This series highlighted 56 national parks and historic sites, one for each state, territory, and D.C. Designs were highly detailed, with many low-mintage issues standing out to collectors.

  • Key Collectible: The 2019-2020 “W” mintmark quarters struck at West Point, issued only for circulation, became instant modern rarities.

Washington Crossing the Delaware (2021)

In 2021, after the ATB series ended, a one-year reverse design showed Washington crossing the Delaware River, harkening back to the Revolutionary War.

American Women Quarters (2022–2025)

Currently ongoing, this series celebrates pioneering American women. Each year features five designs, with honorees from diverse backgrounds.
