CVC & Collectables presents this 1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, graded by NGC as XF Details (Cleaned), represents a significant piece of early American numismatic history. This coin is part of the Draped Bust series, which was minted from 1795 to 1804, featuring the iconic design created by Robert Scot, the first Chief Engraver of the United States Mint. Although the 1804 was never struck for ciruclation they’re only a few known and have sold for millions.
On the obverse, the coin displays a portrait of Liberty facing right, her hair flowing and draped with a ribbon. This elegant depiction of Liberty is surrounded by the inscription “LIBERTY” at the top, and the date “1799” is positioned below. Thirteen stars encircle the portrait, symbolizing the original thirteen colonies.
The reverse of the coin showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons, representing peace and military readiness, respectively. Above the eagle, a cluster of stars is arranged under an arc of clouds. The inscription “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” encircles the design.
Despite the “Improperly Cleaned” designation, indicating that the coin has undergone some form of cleaning which may have altered its original surface, the XF (Extremely Fine) grade signifies that the coin retains a considerable amount of detail, with slight wear evident on the highest points of the design.
The 1799 Draped Bust Silver Dollar is composed of 89.24% silver and 10.76% copper, weighing approximately 26.96 grams, with a diameter of 39-40 mm. This coin not only serves as a collector’s item but also as a historical artifact, reflecting the early years of the United States and its fledgling minting practices. Find more alike here!
