Historical Significance
No Eisenhower Dollars were dated 1975. Instead, all dollars struck during 1975 and 1976 carried the dual date 1776–1976 for the Bicentennial celebration. The special reverse design was selected through a national competition and became one of the most recognizable commemorative coin designs in modern U.S. history.
Collectibility
The Philadelphia Bicentennial Eisenhower Dollar was issued in two reverse varieties:
- Type 1: Bold, block-style reverse lettering
- Type 2: Sharper, thinner reverse lettering
Philadelphia mintages were:
- Type 1: 4,019,000
- Type 2: 113,318,000
Because the Type 2 design replaced Type 1 early in production, Type 1 Philadelphia business strikes are considerably scarcer and are actively sought by Eisenhower Dollar specialists.
