Historical Significance
Released as the first State Quarter of 2001, the New York issue emphasizes the state’s role as a historic port of entry for immigrants and a symbol of opportunity. The Statue of Liberty, “Gateway to Freedom” motto, and waterways of the Hudson and Erie Canal highlight how New York connected the Atlantic to the interior and welcomed millions through New York Harbor and Ellis Island.
The 11 stars around the design mark New York’s place as the 11th state to join the Union, while the state outline roots the imagery in geography. Combining a global icon with a simple, bold layout, the coin became one of the most recognizable and widely collected pieces in the entire 50 State Quarters Program.
Collectibility
With more than 1.27 billion P and D coins plus proof and silver-proof issues, the 2001 New York quarter is common in circulation but essential in any complete State Quarters set.
-
Circulation strikes (P & D): Popular for BU rolls and bags; high-grade certified examples (MS67–MS68) with clean fields and strong luster bring premiums among registry collectors.
-
S-mint clad proofs: Deep cameo proof strikes from standard 2001 proof sets provide sharp detail on Liberty, the stars, and the state outline.
-
S-mint 90% silver proofs: Lower mintages, frosted devices, and silver content make these the premium choice for specialists building high-end State Quarter albums.
Error and variety collectors also watch the New York issue for off-center broadstrikes, partial clads, and “greasy die” weakness, which can command strong premiums when well preserved.
