Design
Obverse: Features John Flanagan’s iconic portrait of George Washington, adapted from the original quarter dollar design first introduced in 1932.
Reverse: Depicts a Coquí tree frog resting on a leaf in the foreground with a Puerto Rican Parrot perched on a branch in the background. The design highlights two of El Yunque’s most recognizable and beloved native species. Inscriptions include “EL YUNQUE,” “PUERTO RICO,” “2012,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
About El Yunque National Forest
El Yunque National Forest is located in northeastern Puerto Rico and is the only tropical rainforest within the U.S. National Forest System. Covering nearly 29,000 acres, the forest receives abundant rainfall and supports a rich ecosystem of tropical plants, waterfalls, and wildlife. The Puerto Rican Parrot featured on the coin is one of the rarest birds in the world and represents decades of successful conservation efforts.
Collectibility
The 2012-P El Yunque has a collector mintage of 24,000 pieces, making it a desirable issue within the America the Beautiful series. Its tropical rainforest theme, unique wildlife design, and representation of Puerto Rico distinguish it from many mainland park issues. Examples accompanied by their original U.S. Mint box and Certificate of Authenticity remain especially popular with collectors seeking complete ATB sets.
