Historical Significance
The Massachusetts State Quarter was released on January 3, 2000, as the sixth coin of the 50 State Quarters Program and the first issue of the new millennium.
Its reverse honors the citizen-soldiers of the American Revolution with the Minuteman statue at North Bridge in Concord, symbolizing those prepared to fight at “a minute’s notice.” Set over an outline of the Commonwealth and the inscription “THE BAY STATE,” the design ties Massachusetts’ Revolutionary role—home of the “shot heard ’round the world”—to its coastal New England identity and early statehood in 1788.
