Historical Significance

Released May 22, 2000, the South Carolina quarter is the eighth coin of the 50 State Quarters Program and the first to combine three state symbols in a single, compact design.

The reverse highlights South Carolina’s Revolutionary War legacy and coastal identity through the cabbage palmetto, long associated with Fort Moultrie and the state flag, alongside the Carolina wren and yellow jessamine. The state outline and “THE PALMETTO STATE” inscription reinforce South Carolina’s nickname and its early admission to the Union on May 23, 1788.

Collectibility

With more than 742 million pieces struck, the 2000-P South Carolina quarter is common in circulation, but sharply struck, lustrous examples are much scarcer and sought after for high-quality State Quarter sets.

Collectors often assemble a four-coin South Carolina lineup—2000-P, 2000-D, 2000-S clad proof, and 2000-S silver proof—using choice P-mint pieces to represent everyday circulation while the proofs supply the cameo eye appeal. The densely symbolic “Palmetto State” design keeps this issue popular with both regional collectors and full 50 State Quarters builders.
