CVC & Collectables presents the Spokane Chamber of Commerce “Barrel of Money” so-called dollar, cataloged HK-728B (silvered) and certified NGC AU 58. A charming Pacific Northwest promotion, it ties Spokane’s early boosters to apples, water-power, and rail.
Medal Highlights:
- Catalog / Variety: HK-728B (B-variety, silvered finish)
- Issuer: Spokane Chamber of Commerce, Washington
- Composition / Size: Silvered brass/bronze, ~32 mm (approx.)
- Obverse: Large barrel with apple; on barrel “You Can Make / a Barrel of Money / Growing Apples / in the / Spokane Country”; outer legend “Compliments of Spokane Chamber of Commerce.”
- Reverse: Map of Spokane area with radiating rail lines; legends “All Roads Lead to Spokane” above, “The Power City” below; microscopic CHILDS (l.) and CHICAGO (r.).
- Grade: NGC AU 58 (light friction, strong eye appeal)
Dating & Attribution (why c.1905):
Though undated, the reverse map shows rail labels used to narrow the striking date: the “Spok Intertl” (Spokane International Railway) was founded 1905, and lines marked “PAC RY” refer to a Pacific Railway entity active circa 1905–1906. Together they indicate the medal was produced in 1905 for Chamber promotion. The die work is attributed to Childs (Chicago), whose microscopic signature appears on the reverse.
Collectibility:
- Desirable B-variety silvered finish in AU 58
- Popular So-Called Dollar type with railroad map and apple-industry theme
- Strong crossover for collectors of Washingtoniana, exposition/booster medals, and railroad ephemera
- Scarcer high-grade survivor; most examples show handling from distribution
